Dragstalgia 2012 Report

In only it’s second year Dragstalgia attracted a great crowd of Nostalgia and Hot Rod enthusiasts and what a weekend we had!

Saturday morning arrived with the heavy rain that had fell overnight (and continued to fall) but it certainly didn’t dampen spirits. The Historic F1 Stock Cars kept the crowds amused early in the day with some fantastic bumper rubbing racing and they continued with a number of races throughout the weekend. Elsewhere on site we had filled the Historic Vehicle display with an evolution of Dragsters showing the early Hounddog 1, Chris Hartnells Backdraft Slingshot and Russ Carpenters Glacier Grenade – all vehicles which hope to be out of the marquee and on track by 2013! Another fine addition to the display was the Money Hungry Pro Stock Camaro that has been drag racing for over 40 years! The Fuelers bar was showing footage from Santa Pod in the 60’s-70’s to show how things have changed and also selling the real ale as part of the beer festival – and fast! So fast in fact that by 6 o clock they were actually sold out! The Hurricane (we stand to be corrected on that as our local expert tells us it was a spitfire?) flew past earlier than expected due to the conditions and was enjoyed by all.

The ever hard working track crew did not give up despite the persistent rain and by just after 4 o clock, their hard work was rewarded and the track opened to the eagerly waiting racers. We managed to complete 1 of the scheduled race sessions and got some RWYB in and there was some great action. Then the rain came down yet again and it looked like that would be it… But no one gave up – the track crew got the track dry just in time for the grand finale of the evening. First up was the FireForce 3 Jet Funny Car of Martin Hill who made a 5 second pass followed by the almighty racket otherwise known as the Cacklefest. Led by the first public fire up of the Allard for many decades, it was a fantastic display of funny cars, altereds and dragsters all fired up and running at the same time!
But, that wasn’t it…We still had the fire burnouts to go and they did not disappoint. Seasoned Fire Burnout performer Dave Gibbons braved the heat first followed by John Everitt in the Alien altered taking part for the first time and also Bob Hawkins in his Slingshot. Adam Gleadow was lined up for Fire Burnout number 4 but unfortunately lost a fuel line. That was not all for the evening though, after that the entertainment moved over to the Fuelers Bar as hosted by Milkcow Vintage Magazine. The DJ’s, band and burlesque shows were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone around and a good time was had by all!

Luckily the forecast was always better for Sunday and as it came around we even had a bit of sun. We had excellent conditions for racing and it seems as though everyone knew as people queued to get through the gate! The track opened on schedule and throughout the day we completed the full programme of events and there were almost too many highlights to list! We have to mention the 2 Nostalgia Funny Cars of Wendy Baker and Ramon Van Der Weurf all the way from Belgium, at the 2nd time of asking on the day they both made it out on the track together, 2 storming burnouts followed by dry hops to the line from both of them and then storming side by side 7.0’s. Norm Wheeldon in the Two Much double engined Slingshot made 2 passes both with long smokey burnouts to the crowds delight, the NSA Bikes made a number of impressive runs throughout the day and of course we had Ronnie Picardo in the Historic Wheelie Stingray. The 2 Jet Cars were also out doing their stuff too.

The Show n Shine arena was packed full of stunning show cars and the winners are as follows:

We also had the Showmanship trophies to award – everyone taking to the track was eligible and the winners were chosen by the commentary team:

Well done to all of these guys for helping to put on a fantastic show – we hope that your trophies go some way to rewarding your efforts! We will also have to put up another trophy for next year along the lines of “Moment of the Weekend” as the judges felt that John Everitt deserved a trophy for his fire burnout, after performing the burnout he idled up to 330 foot with the car still actually on fire!

Finally we’d like to thank everyone for coming along to the event, especially those who brought cars to put on display or take part in the various activities – you put on a fantastic show and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did! We’ll see you at Dragstalgia on 13th-14th July 2013!
