Dragstalgia 2013 Report

Dragstalgia 2013, finally a dry one and what a weekend it was!

It began on Friday when gates opened for a Peak Performance Test & Tune day with a number of Nostalgic cars and bikes taking to the track to practise ahead of a busy weekend. These included Ramon Van Der Weurf in the Wild’r at Heart Funny Car and a certain Ian Demaine who raced here in 1967 in his Zodiac, unfortunately Ian broke on Friday so didn’t race throughout the weekend.

The pits rapidly filled up and by the end of the day they were filled with some of the most jaw dropping Nostalgia machines anywhere in the UK, all ready for action on Sunday morning.

As morning broke with beaming sunshine the RWYB’ers filled the fire up road, all eager to hit the track. There was some fantastic RWYB action all weekend long, in fact, the quality of RWYB cars & Bikes was so high, it was just like watching an invited race class even when we weren’t! Highlights included the debut of Leo Knights Alleygator machine, some awesome VW vs. V8 action, a couple of fuel bikes (Steve was fine after his crash and we hope to see him back on track soon), some Street Eliminator Cars and a load more besides!

The quality of the RWYB was good but the invited race classes were on another level all weekend and we can’t thank all participants enough for putting on a blinding show. Who would have imagined that we would have 6 x Nostalgia Funny Cars? Who even knew there were 6 around? These guys really are making the Nostalgia scene at the moment, immaculate cars, participating in the Cacklefest, dry hops, huge smoky burnouts and flawless runs, who would want more? Hopefully by Dragstalgia 2014 we will have 6 ready to run in anger.

Despite a low entry for the class, the Fuel Altereds were on top form all weekend with a huge brace of 6 second runs including a healthy batch of 6.3s from the Chaos team with them taking the event win.

The Supercharged Outlaws featured a couple of International entries and as usual put on an excellent showing of Doorslammers (check Ian Kerrs new paint job), Funny Cars, Altereds and Slingshots featuring a number of stunning 7 second passes.

The high flying Outlaw Anglias brought a good number of cars along and entertained throughout picking a couple of our showmanship trophies on the way. Congratulations to Cliff Griffin on taking the class win.

The Wild Bunch really encapsulate the spirit of the event with the emphasis on the show, it was good to see a good number of teams making and effort with the back up girl competition and that was rewarded with the trophy going to a Wild Bunch racer. It was also good to see a number of vehicles take to the track that we’ve never seen at Santa Pod before so thanks to them for making the journey too!

The fledgling Super Stock class gets more popular each year and this years event win going to Simon Parker in the Nightmare Camaro, excellent job by all racers involved.

gasser circus

Watching the Gasser Circus was like stepping back in time 60 years, all racers were hard charging in beautifully turned out cars.

outlaw street

The entry level class of Outlaw Street completed our entry list for 4 wheels and it was great to see a good number of cars having a go with a number running PB’s throughout the weekend.

nsa

The invited NSA Bikes put in a number of passes each day showing how racing on 2 wheels has developed over the years. Thanks to all of those guys for bringing these bikes back to life at Santa Pod once again.

A number of the Historic vehicles had issues meaning they didn’t make it on track at all but Phil Evans in his classic Singer Vogue and Ian Turboville in his period correct Slingshot certainly made the most of the track time and kept the crowds entertained.

The Saturday night show lived up to expectations with Martin Hill in his FireForce Jet Funny Car opening the show before the Cacklefest featuring a number of Funny Cars, slingshots and more and then the infamous fire burnouts. We were treated to 3 this year and the crowd went wild.

Then it was all over to the Fuelers Bar for a night of music, burlesque and beer at the Fuelers Bar Beer festival which once again went down a storm.

Sunday was show car day with another outstanding display from the Tri Chevy guys on top of the already busy Show & Shine competition.

It was a Chevy that took the top spot with Andy Georgallis in his 55 Bel Air taking Best in Show. The car had undergone a 4 year restoration and it looked like it’d had a lifetime of love.

Keith Branch’s 27 T took a top 5 trophy in his green machine which was a real showstopper. The car was built by the Draper Brothers now of Nostalgia Funny Car fame!

Paul Stephens 54 Chevy was on display in the campsite all weekend and thankfully rolled round to the Show & Shine competition on Sunday. This Pro Street Sedan featured a 3/12 inch roof chop and what looked like a huge motor!

John Shakeshafts ‘32 5 Window Coupe looked fresh out of the workshop and this iconic roadster was in mint condition, deserved of a top 5 trophy.

Elsewhere on site the Historic F1 Stock cars put on a number of paint rubbing displays and we had a historic marquee filled with various photos, posters and vehicles that had taken to the track years ago including the famed Stardust body and chassis and Commuter just outside sparkling in the sunlight.

The Showmanship as judged by the commentary team were awarded as follows:
