Dragstalgia 2016 Report & Winners

In just its 6th year, Dragstalgia has become a major event on every drag racing fans calendar and thankfully, its ranks highly with the hot rodding fraternity too. The pits were always going to busy and before long they were filled to the brim with nostalgia goodness. We’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone for taking up as little room as possible and a special thanks to those that were kind enough to pit on grass.

Friday was arrival/RWYB day and there were some beautiful rods and muscle cars making the most of the track time and a few of the invited classes got in on the action too. We got a first glimpse at some brand new vehicles too including Micky Hannah’s stunning slingshot and Jim Tuckers 33 Coupe. Duncan Watts Duster was a new one on us too and could be seen running hard throughout the weekend. The Smoggers rolled in all the way from Holland and their arrival was a sight to behold and it was nice to see them getting on track and having some fun too. The fun continued into the Friday night and Jack Rabbit Slim kept us all entertained whilst you all remained topped up on real ale and cider from the beer festival.

Saturday was the first race day and there were the select few RWYB vehicles up first to pound the quarter mile. Jonny Smith in his Enfield 8000 was one of those eager to get some times in and we’re pleased to say that Jonny smashed a world record with an incredible 9.86 pass at 121mph making that the quickest pass from a road legal electric vehicle!
There were some stonking passes from all of the invited race classes and we saw 6 second passes a number of times. Joe Bond had the weekend of his life, not only celebrating his 30th birthday but also taking the victory in the first ever slingshot showdown with a brace of 6 second passes.

Match Racing was the order of the weekend for the 2 visiting American Fuel Altereds, Rat Trap and Bradfords Topolino. The home grown entry of Nick Davies and Havoc added some spice to the mix and Ramon Van Der Weurf in the Wild’r at Heart Funny car completed the Europe vs America foursome. Seeing the scoreboards light up several times with side by side 6’s, often within a tenth of each other was a sight to be hold and one that many of us will remember for a long, long time. The final score was Europe 2, America 2. To be continued at the European Finals…

The 2 European entries times were counted towards the Cannonball and as a fitting finale, Ramon met Nick in the final and it was Ramon that walked away with the honours:

Commiserations to those that suffered damage over the weekend including Keith Freeman of the Supercharged Outlaws after connecting with the wall and the Willys Wars entrant of Gerry Treit who pulled a massive wheelie before crashing back down to earth with a bang – picking up the wheelie of the weekend trophy with that effort.

On the subject of the showmanship trophies, first of all, thanks and well done to everyone for going the extra mile this weekend with putting on a show, dressing up, long smoky burnouts and all out runs. Congratulations to the eventual winners:
