The sun shone for the 4th annual Junior Drag Racing Fun Day on Wednesday 31st August 2016. This ever growing event saw over 4,000 spectators come along to enjoy this free family day out.
|As in previous years, a local children’s charity was chosen as benefactor to the Junior Day and MK based Harry’s Rainbow were in attendance collecting much appreciated donations. Harry’s Rainbow which was set up following the death of Lee and Odette’s son after his unexpected death in March 2009. They found it very difficult to get the bereavement help and support for Jessica, Harry’s twin, then 5 years old, and as a result set up the charity in October 2011. The Live Action Arena shows proved extremely popular as monster truck ‘Podzilla’ and stunt biker ‘Wheelie Joe’ thrilled the crowds. Families gathered on the grass bank and in the grandstands to watch as Podzilla demolished cars and Wheelie Joe performed an array of tricks on his bike.
In between the Live Action shows, the Red Dragon Passenger Monster Truck had queues of adrenaline seeking fans who were treated to a bird’s eye view aboard the 5 tonne truck as it drove over cars and tore around the arena. Likewise, the mini monster trucks were a great new addition to the Junior Day as children had the chance to get behind the wheel and try their driving skills in miniature versions of monster trucks.
Static displays featuring Santa Pod Raceway’s array of drag racing show cars, the infamous Bloodhound Supersonic Car and the ever popular Lightning McQueen style cars allowed spectators to get up close and personal with these mean machines and made for great photo opportunities.
Track action was focused on the stars of the show, the Junior Racers, who kept the crowds entertained with drag strip action throughout the day. These youngsters are securing the future of drag racing and the Junior Day provides an ideal platform to showcase their skills.
Track highlights came in the form of two jet cars. FireForce 3 Jet Funny Car put on a storming ¼ mile pass of 5.90 seconds at 266mph. Reign of Fire is a miniature scale jet car and although it is still in the early stages of testing, pilot Lee Dennick, put in a couple of brilliant 130mph+ runs with some impressive flames on the startline.
So far, £1642.36 has been raised for Harry’s Rainbow with more donations expected to come in over the next few weeks.
